Can tooth cavities heal spontaniously?

Ramiel Nagel the author of the book “Cure tooth decay” and the following video has an outstanding and original view on the process of tooth decay formation. He tries to focus our attention on the nutrition as a key moment in tooth decay prevention and treatment and says that bacteria have nothing to do with decay and cavity formation. Some of his statements are the holly truth; some to my opinion are farfetched, but never the way the book and the video are worth looking at.

Can the tooth heal spontaneously?

Ramiel Nagel takes up the position that a tooth is able to heal spontaneously. All that we need to do is to create proper conditions. In general this is right. Tooth is not a peace of porcelain mechanically retained in the bony socket. It is a real organ. It has pulp with nerves and vessels inside providing nutrition and irritability. The outer cover consists of two layers: dentin and enamel. Both have structural elements that make transport of minerals and organic substances from the pulp to the tooth surface and back possible.

The imbedding of the calcium and phosphate ions into the enamel and dentin is called remineralization. If the ions go out to saliva it called demineralization. Both processes are going on all the time. If their intensity is equal, enamel remains stable. If demineralization comes forward enamel becomes fragile and exposed to decay. If remineralization goes faster hard tissues of the tooth become stronger. So it sounds like truth, maybe a tooth can heal…

Composition and pH-rate of saliva are the key moments for the de/remineralization processes to go. Normally saliva is oversaturated with calcium and phosphate ions and has neutral or slightly alkalinous reaction. And it is good for remineralization. If the diet is not proper, with mineral and vitamin deficiency or extra carbohydrates level saliva has lower pH rate and contains less useful ions. Instead of repairing the tooth structure it begins destroying it. But steel there is no cavity…

Are bacteria so innocent and do we need killing it?

pH rate of saliva is rarely falls lower than 6.0. Critical demineralization of enamel which leads to cavity formation needs at least 4.5 (beer has that one) and a long exposition. Plaque and bacteria – these are to confederates guilty in cavity formation. Plaque makes a home for bacteria. Bacteria produce acid. Low pH rate of saliva makes the enamel easy meat for caries, not more. No plaque – no accumulation of bacteria. No bacteria – no acid. Normal pH rate and high mineralization of saliva can help rebuilding hard tissues, not more.

So we need to remove plaque, eliminate bacteria and keep the saliva on toes. The snag is that these three things are to be made simultaneously. If we don’t touch plaque new bacteria will come, if we leave the bacteria alone – new portion of plaque will accumulate. Saliva won’t have enough time to repair the injury.

So nutrition, if it is not proper, can start the ball rolling, but

can’t stop it itself even if becomes perfect.

Why deep cavities are not likely to heal spontaneously?

Just because they are deep. Such a cavity is a good place for plaque accumulation and local low pH rate formation. This is just that case when good saliva doesn’t have enough time. But small cavities or spots can be easily repaired, if there is no plaque and no bacteria. So as for me I’m not likely to wait for a miracle using Nagel’s diet, but in some cases it may be definitely helpful.

What is the “holy truth”?

The holy truth is that modern people do not eat normally. Synthetic products, excessive rate of processed vegetable oils and carbohydrates make a good basis not only for tooth decay, but for many diseases of civilization. So, I don’t know if Negel’s diet will make you tooth cavities to heal, but it may help you to feel better anyways.
